Library FAQs

When can I come to the library?

Scheduled middle school class library visits occur every two weeks. All students can visit the Middle & Senior School Library before or after school, and during breaks or free periods from Monday-Friday between 8:15am and 4:15pm.

If there is a specific book you would like, please place it on hold.

How many books can I borrow at one time?

There is no limit on the number of books you can check out at once, but please keep the needs of other students in mind!

For how long can I borrow a library book?

Borrowers have two weeks to return their books after checking them out from the library. Unless another borrower has placed a hold on your book, you can renew books for two additional two-week periods after your first checkout.

What happens if I have an overdue library book?

The librarian sends automatic overdue notices at the end of each month. If you have overdue books checked out to your library profile, please return them as soon as possible. We do not charge fines for overdue library books, but will follow up with borrowers who have items overdue by more than two months.

What if I lose or damage a library book?

Please email the librarian if you lose or damage a library book so that it can be replaced. You will be charged the list price of a replacement copy.

How can I check out a book?

Borrowers can check out books with the computer and barcode scanner at the library circulation desk.

Follow these steps to check out a library book:

  1. Check that you are logged into the 'mslibrary' profile on the York Library Middle & Senior School (Accessit).

  4. On your profile page, ensure that the Find field is highlighted, then use the barcode scanner to scan the York School Library barcode (usually at the top right of the front cover or first page) of the book you want to borrow (sign-out).

Always ask if you need help!

How can I search for books in our library catalogue?

Use the search field in Accessit to search for the title, author, or topic of a book.

Records of books in the catalogue will include:

  • Bibliographic information (author, illustrator, editor, edition, publishing date, number of pages, etc.);
  • Location in the library; and
  • Status of availability (available, checked out, eBook, audiobook).

How can I find a book on the library shelves?

Use the information in the Sublocation field of an item's record in the catalogue to find a book on the library shelves. Then, use the Call Number to find the book within its appropriate section. You find the call number printed on the spine label of every library book.

  • Fiction books are separated into sections based on the genre they best represent. Within each section, books are arranged alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's last name (e.g., FIC ALT, FIC CAM, FIC SIN).
  • Nonfiction books are arranged by topic according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. If there are multiple titles with the same DDC number, they are also ordered alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's last name (e.g., 500 ABE, 500 MAC, 500 TSU).
  • Some books are organized in separate collections in and out of the main library space:
    • Reference titles, Extended Essays, and Personal Projects can be found behind the library circulation desk.
    • Professional Development titles can be found in the Staff Lounge on the 2nd floor.
    • FrenchSpanish, and Mandarin language titles can be found on the shelves by the Wellness Centre.
    • Graphic Novels can be found to the right of the A/V cabinet (to the left of the fiction books).
    • Manga titles can be found on the shelves at the left front corner of the library space.
