Middle & Senior School Library: Books

Find Books on the Shelves

1. Search for the title in the library catalogue.

This screenshot shows a search for the book Gravesavers:

2. Is the book available?

You can determine whether an item is currently available for you to borrow (and how you can borrow it) by checking the information below the book's cover image. Green numbering means it is available and red means it is not.

3. Which genre section is it in?

Our fiction books are organized in sections according to the genre they best represent:

4. Where is it on the shelf?

In our library, books are arranged by call number:

  • In each fiction section, call numbers start with 'FIC', followed by the first three letters of the author's last name.
  • Nonfiction call numbers start with the book's Dewey Decimal Classification number (this allows for books to be grouped together by subject), followed by the first three letters of the author's last name.

Print Books at Our Library

The Middle & Senior School library catalogue (Accessit) shows all information about print and digital books in our collection, including:

  • Bibliographic information (author, illustrator, edition, publishing date, number of pages, etc.)
  • Location in the library (or on Sora)
  • Status of availability (available, checked out, eBook, audiobook)

You can also log in to your library profile with your York School Google account to access your checkouts, borrowing history, renew titles, place holds, and create a list of "favourites" from titles in our catalogue.

We use the "classic" catalogue at the library circulation desk to check out books. Both catalogue interfaces contain the same information -- they just look a bit different.

Use the Catalog tab to search for titles in the library collection, and the Circulation tab to check out books. To check out a book, search for your last name in the Find field, or click the By Homeroom tab to find your profile from your homeroom class.

Open Access (Free) eBooks

Open access (OA) refers to digital content that is available free of charge for everyone.

Here are some online databases that provide open access to eBooks. Most books from these sources are scholarly nonfiction titles, though you can find some fiction titles as well. Note: some can be downloaded while others can only be read online.
