How to Cite ChatGPT

APA Style:

The four elements you need when citing ChatGPT are: author, date, title and source. The author of the model is OpenAI.

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Aug 3 version) [Large Language Model]

General notes on referencing social media

For all social media platforms:

  • Real name unknown, use the screen/account name (no brackets)
  • No proper title? Use the first 20 words of the post (links, #, emojis count as one word each--do not italicize emojis)
  • Include any attachments in the post (in square brackets). Ex. title of post [image attached]
  • When referencing a comment, use the comment's URL, not the original post's (R click on comment's timestamp & click "Copy link address")

APA in-text citation

APA in-text citations 7th edition

  • To create an in-text citation in APA style, you use the author's surnames only and the year in text.
  • If you are using a direct quote, you will also need to use the page number.
  • If an in-text citation has the authors' names in brackets use "&" in between the authors' names: (Jones & Smith, 2021, p.29).
