Style Guide: Image

A handy guide to show you how to properly format references and in-text citations for all your resources in APA style

Reference List

Creator name. (Year). Title of image [Photography]. Platform name. URL

In-text citation

Some images specify that they may be used without attribution, in which case you do not need to create a reference or in-text citation or note of attribution when using the image. However, for those images that require attribution, follow these guidelines:

When you refer to an image but do not actually include the image in your paper, use the following as an in-text citation:

(Creator, Year).

When you include the image in your paper, instead of creating an in-text citation use the image's copyright information to create a note of attribution as follows and display that note directly below the image:

Note. From Title of image [Photograph], by Creator name, Year, Platform URL. Creative Commons license

Include the Creative Commons license that accompanies the image, ex. CC BY 2.0.
